Pictures from the Week

On 08-22-08, Lauren enjoyed a banana with breakfast. However, she only wanted to eat it the way I normally eat it--out of the skin. Once she finished eating it out of the skin, she tried to eat the skin...however, she decided that it wasn't good to eat, but it was a fun toy!
After school on Monday, 08-25-08, Lauren wanted to color with me. Here she is taking colored pencils out of their container and letting them fall onto the floor. She didn't get the concept of coloring on paper, but she had fun playing with the pencils.
I had to get bread on Tuesday. I refuse to pay the prices at the store, so I make a special stop at a bakery outlet and pay $1.29 for a loaf of namebrand wheat. They sometimes offer free samples to entice you to buy more. This time it was a Twinkie. While I wasn't planning on letting Lauren eat it, she saw it, screamed, and had eaten the entire thing in about 8 minutes from the bakery to Wal-Mart. 08-26-08
Lauren enjoys climbing up in her camping chair that Grandpa Wade got her. She likes to put her sippy cup in the cupholder, unplug her pacifier, and then drink from her sippy. Lauren is also learning her limitations with the chair. We've been having to fuss at her to sit down. She grins devilishly at us when we tell her to sit and will only usually sit once we start to stand up to make her sit. 08-30-08
Lauren has a (bad) habit of throwing all of her books from the shelf to the floor. To be honest, I got tired of picking them up, so I only left out her favorites and put the rest in her room. Lauren decided that it would be fun to explore this new, open space. 08-30-08
Showing off those pearly whites for mommy! What a ham! She now has 9 teeth. 08-30-08
Harris actually enjoyed some of his cake. He was covered in much more frosting after a while.
What a mess! The party theme was Spiderman and the cupcakes were dark blue or red. Aunt Suzy commented that she thinks Lauren enjoyed this party more than her own.
Lauren absolutely distroyed her cupcake. If you look closely, she was able to lodge the frosting into her ears. After she was done, I took her straight up to the bathtub. The first tubfull needed to be drained as the water was pink with the dye. The second tubfull produced a frosting covered Harris and a clean, mostly white Lauren. She has some spots on her, especially on her hands, that will be pink for quite a while. I shared Aunt Ivy's whitening toothpaste remedy with the other parents at the party.

Busy, Busy Week!

Lauren and I both have had good weeks in our new classrooms! Lauren is eating 2nds on most foods at daycare, even FRUIT! She likes pears. I discovered this morning that she will eat peaches, pears, and cherries as long as they are room temperature! That may be why she eats them at daycare and why she eats bananas.

Lauren has discovered how to blow raspberries. She prefers to lift my shirt to deliver them on my belly or to sneak attack my calf. She thinks that it's hilarious and laughs as hard, if not harder, than Paul and I do. In the attack of the raspberries, Lauren has also discovered my belly button, something that she's fascinated and disgusted by. She likes to poke her finger in my belly button then look at her finger as though it's tainted.

She's adjusted well to the toddler classroom. There was actually one day last week when I picked her up that she did NOT cry because I didn't get to her fast enough! Progress! All of the other toddlers who knew me from the other classroom swarm around me when I go in, but because Lauren is usually in my arms, she doesn't protest the attention I get.

Tooth number 9 poked through last week as well. What's different about this tooth is that it appears to be a molar. She has the top and bottom 4 teeth in sequence, but on the top left, there is a gap between the 4th tooth and the new tooth. I also noticed more pokes from this new tooth today. Lauren has really been chomping on her pacifier, toys, hands, and anything else that she can get into her mouth (including her foot this morning, at which she squealed because it tickled!).

Bye-bye is also coming along a bit more easily and quickly. She always waves (and pants) at Buster when we leave for school and arrive home in the evenings. She waves to people in stores, and she has even started to wave at people (and pets) who walk past our house.

We're discerning more words from Lauren. She now says Mama, Dada, Dad, cat, yeah, and up. She's been using sign to say please much more frequently. If we say please, she rubs her chest, even if we aren't talking to her! However, if she really wants something, she rubs both hands on her chest, thinking that it will surely get her what she wants and fast! Lauren's growing up very quickly!

8 Teeth

Lauren has had 8 teeth since around her 1st birthday. I just realized that I had not yet reported this milestone! She's also walking a lot more on her own.

Rough Week

We've had a really rough week. Lauren has been sick and was out of daycare twice this week. (Paul was with her Wednesday and I was with her Friday.) The MMR shot that she got on Monday is either the culprit or the shots lowered her immunity and she got a nasty dose of the virus that is going around daycare.

I took Lauren to the doctor Friday because her temperature kept going up and down. From Monday to today, her temperature was 98.7 to 103.3 (this morning). Lauren has been on Tylenol all week and I've been giving her cool baths. She's been very clingy and whiny. She hasn't had her usual appetite, but she's eating and drinking more today. From Monday to Friday, she lost a little over 1/2 a pound.

So, needless to say, we don't have many pictures from this week because we've been loving on Lauren or trying to keep her temperature down. She went to bed around 8:45 tonight and I just checked on her. She feels nice and cool. I'm hoping that we're just about over this, especially with school starting on Monday! (I actually went to school while Lauren napped this afternoon to get some things done!) I've been taking naps whenever Lauren has because she's been up between 2 and 5 am, usually for 45 minutes at a time, but I can't fall back asleep easily. For the first time in my life, I have wished to be the one who was sick to spare Lauren the pain and frustration.

The doctor told me to expect the temperatures for up to two weeks. Please say prayers that she continues to mend.

Paul's 30th Birthday 08-12-08

Paul's 30th birthday was a week ago today. The night before I his birthday, I told him that I had a woman's meeting with some people from our church. We were going to meet for dinner and discuss some projects. (The woman's group actually met this night, but I had to skip the meeting.) He didn't know that I had planned to meet up with some women he works with in order to decorate his little "home" at work. The banner said, "Look Who's 30!"
Here was his cake area.
And his cake. It was delicious! I took it out of the freezer at Food Lion, and it was frozen. It tasted like a frozen Twinkie!
Here's the birthday boy with his cake before we chopped it up to share.
I surprised Paul at work with his cake. He was really excited and, while he had to work, I hope that this was a bright spot in his day.

1st Birthday 08-16-08

Happy 1st Birthday, Lauren!!!!

Lauren's grandparents Wade and great-grandpa McCaslin got Lauren her rocking chair. Grandpa Wade put it together. Behind Lauren's head, you can see where Grandpa McCaslin carved her name into the wood. She loved her rocker!
Lauren and Harris, excited about celebrating Lauren's birthday. Lauren did not want to wear her birthday hat, but Harris thought it was cool.
Lauren became interested in Harris's hat, only because she wasn't wearing it. (When Lauren vacated her chair, yet another birthday present, Harris jumped in and loved it!)
Lauren opened her gifts after her cake. (I got the pictures a bit out of order.) This gift was from the Cadwalladers, a Little People tractor and trailer. Lauren LOVED it!
Paul put all of Lauren's gifts in one spot and she tore into them!
Some of our party guests!
Daddy and Mommy helped Lauren blow out her candle. (She didn't touch it this time while it was lit, but she got her hands into the frosting before we lit the candle!)
Blowing out the candle. You can see that I had to hold Lauren's hands back from smashing the cake!
I think I like this cake...
Yep, I do! What a mess!!
Yummy!!
Lauren was happily eating her cake until we put a party hat on her. She did NOT want to wear her hat! (It's my party and I'll cry if I want to, cry if I want to...)
Harris was curious about what Lauren was eating. Lauren dropped a piece of cake in her chair and Harris tried to get it. I gave him a piece of cake which he promptly dropped to the ground, frosting side first. Harris did not eat any of Lauren's cake.
After Lauren enjoyed her cake, Grandma Wade gave Lauren a bath. What a model, don't you think? (Lauren likes to get on her belly to "swim" in the tub during bath time.) Fortunately, this cake lacked the dye that the cupcakes contained.
Lauren's 1st ride in her go-go from the Workmans. Tracy looked all over the area to find it because her children and nephew all loved this go-go! And look! It's pink!! Lauren was nervous about her toy at first, but now she can climb into it without any problems. She can even scoot some herself enough to move her go-go forward without me pushing! We've taken walks every day since Saturday in the go-go...people can hear us coming a mile off! While in the go-go, Lauren likes to wave and honk the horn. However, she typically waves at trees, dogs, and squirrels and ignores people who wave to her. We'll have to work on some social skills.
As you can see, Lauren LOVES her new go-go. However, Hailey wanted to play with it, too. The solution--Hailey sat on Lauren's lap. Lauren was not impressed with this situation, and eventually she got Hailey off of her and let Hailey play with her new toy.
The Wades came to visit and to help us celebrate Lauren's birthday. Here we are, dressed up after church. Uncle Luke, Grandpa Wade, Grandma Wade, Lauren, me, and Paul. We wanted a nice picture of all of us and thought it best to get it done after church, before we got our good clothes dirty.

Lauren's 1st Old Soldier's Day car cruise. This is a tradition in Newton. The festivities last all week. We will be getting out at 1:00 on Thursday in order to attend the parade. If we don't get out of town and to our destinations by about 3:00, you're stuck since they close roads. All of the cars were supposed to be 1972 or older. The cruised up and down the road for about 30-45 minutes. Lauren was well behaved and acted as though she was soaking in the information I told her about the cars.

1 Year Doctor's Appointment 08-18-08

Lauren has a clean bill of health! Dr. V was pleased with her growth. She's just under the 50th percentile for each her weight (20 pounds, 7 1/4 ounces) and her height (28 1/2"). We've been given the go-ahead for milk (oops--we've been doing that for about 2 weeks) and he suggested giving her a vitamin to make sure Lauren's receiving all of the essential vitamins and minerals.

Lauren received 3 shots today. She was NOT a happy girl! She also had bloodwork done to check for anemia and lead levels, all of which came back within normal limits.

Lauren goes back in November for her 15 month check-up and I believe another shot or two. (One of the shots she was to get was ordered but had not come in yet, so we're behind, again.)

Lauren's 1st Birthday

I will post pictures soon. It took me over an hour to compile all of Lauren's pictures from different cameras and to name the files. I will plan to post pictures tomorrow if all goes well.

Tooth #7

I have been checking Lauren's mouth every other day to see if she's sprouted any more teeth. I wasn't expecting to find anything, but lo and behold! Tooth number 7 is located on the top right. Lauren now has 4 on top and 3 on the bottom.

51 Weeks August 7

Here's Lauren, sitting in her chair on August 2. She really likes it . This happened before she decided to stand in it, tipped it over, and got a bruise above her eye.
51 Weeks August 7. Here's Lauren driving her "go-go" and talking on her cell phone. She's been observing her parents...
Dialing while driving...not a good habit...so long as she's not texting...
Funky tongue!
Eating pudding while visiting Tony and Sheila.

Lauren's first ride in her carseat facing forward. I've never heard her talk so much while riding in the car! LAlalalalalalalalalala! She was super happy. August 9.

Sandbox!!

Lauren's Papa and Grandma Bernosky got her a sandbox (at Mommy's request) for her birthday. We were hoping to have it while they were here visiting us, but apparently mid-July is the end of the sandbox season, so everyone was sold out (even stores in Charlotte, Gastonia, and Concord!). Paul brought sand home for Lauren today and we set up her sandbox. Here is her first time in her sandbox. She was tentative, at first...
...and then she discovered that she could EAT the sand...
This was taken just as she was demolishing a sand castle that I'd just built. She isn't excited about it at all, is she?
Getting ready to smash yet another sand castle...
Paul got in on the action. He tried to show her how to sift sand through the plastic screen. Lauren preferred to smash the castle that Paul had built. If you look closely, you can see that, in the meantime, Lauren discovered that she could throw sand out of the box.
To dissuade her from tossing sand out of the box, Paul buried Lauren in the sand. She thought that it was quite fun and helped Paul pat the sand around her. She broke free just as her friend Hailey came to play. We were all able to play in the sand for about 5 minutes when the thunder sounded and the second rain of the day began. Lauren was covered with sand to the point that after I brushed her off, I had to give her a bath to dislodge the sand from other crevices. We now have a mini-sandbar in our tub.
But we had FUN!!!!

50 Weeks--July 31st

Posing as usual, with that horrid pacifier in her mouth. I think that she understands me when I say that when she takes off walking, the pacy comes out...Here's Lauren at 50 weeks.
Pay no attention to the bottle in Lauren's hand. Just know that it is plastic. Have I mentioned recently Lauren's love of playing in cupboards??

Catching Up-Pix from July 27

My parents came down on July 21st and stayed until July 29th. Above you'll see Lauren with my mom on July 22nd when we played outside for a bit. We like to hang out at our neighbor's house and play with their animals. Lauren is so funny! When she sees Buster, their dog, she begins to pant like he does! And when she sees the cats, she smacks her right thigh and says cat. (I pat my leg and say Here kitty, kitty, so I guess she's copying me!)

While my parents were here, they wanted to have a mini 1st birthday party with Lauren since they won't be here for her day. We had a huge meal because my brother, Josh, his girlfriend and her daughter, my sister, Nikki, Aunt Ivy and Uncle David, my parents (obviously), Paul, Lauren, and I were all here to celebrate. (Aunt Ivy and Uncle David didn't know about the festivities, but they were excited to be included!) Below are pictures of Lauren and her exploration of the famous first birthday cupcake!
Lauren looked at us like we were nuts for the first few seconds of Happy Birthday. Then she started to dance and grin at us, hamming it up! She was tentative about making a mess with her cupcake, but as you will see, she got over that quickly!
Lauren got into her cupcake. She really enjoyed the frosting!
This is how much she enjoyed herself! Can you even believe that all of that frosting came from just one cupcake? Note Lauren's forehead. Paul painted a #1 on it for the fun of it.
I gave Lauren a 2nd cupcake. She got into the frosting bit. Our neighbors came to celebrate with us. David didn't come over until Tracy called him. They hid the mess that was my daughter. He looked as though he was going to have a stroke with how colorful she was!
Aunt Ivy loving on a happy girl!
Grandma Bernosky, Papa, Lauren, and Aunt Nikki
Papa and Lauren. I really don't have any other pictures of my family with Lauren while they were down this time. Lauren wasn't much for snuggling like she used to be. She wanted to play.
